ONE DAY IN WILLIAMSBURG-NEW YORK
When I got on the Grey line from Manhattan to Williamsburg, I realized people around me started look all different. Suddenly everywhere I looked I saw tattooed and bearded men, women with horn-rimmed glasses. Without exception, they all looked like they couldn't care less about anything happening around.
When I got of from metro at Nusseu stop, I felt like I am years away from Manhattan. High buildings, rushing people, tourist groups was far far away. Contrary to chaos of Manhattan, Williamsburg has endless sunday vibe for 365 days.
So here is how I spent my day in The Hipsterville aka Williamsburg.
Brunching at Five Leaves
Since there was forever sunday vibe, I decided to start day with big brunch at Five Leaves; nautic-themed cafe planned by Heath Ledger prior to his death.
I have to confess that, if I didn't take address of the cafe as a due to advice of real NewYorkers, I wouldn't find this place at all. Not because it is located at somewhere really hard to find. I wouldn't find this place because there were no signboards or anything like that due to effort to keep this place from being "too popular".
When I stepped inside, I spotted actors you can only see at alternative movies, eating their avocado and eggs with high appetite. So due to my philosophy "Do like Locals!" , I ordered avocado and eggs (no regrets!). After that I drank most delicious coffee and eat lavender ice cream. Who cares if it is snowing outside?
Long story short, everything tasted like perfection. I strongly recommend you to order everything on the menu.
Beacons Closet for Serious Damage to Your Wallet
What is the best thing to do after you tummy is full? Shopping of course :) So after brunch I decided to visit famous second hand stores of Williamsburg. There are tons of them. But if you are short on time, I advice you to directly go to Beacons Closet.
It is the best of the best. Everything in the store is very interesting, sorted out nicely and so cheap. I spend almost two hours at this shop. Yes, shame on me! But I would do the same if I ever have the chance again :)
The Most Famous Hipster Shops of Williamsburg
After shopping session, I decided to walk around ever famous Bedford Street. Stop of this walk was the most organic and the most local Williamsburg shops.
Firstly, I decided to visit Bedford Cheese Shop and try to learn why does a cheese shop became famous all over the world. I mean It is only a cheese shop ! But I learned my lesson well. Here you can taste nearly all types of cheeses all around the world and take classes about cheese types, how to make a cheese etc... Additionally, you can wait in the long line to buy something and chat with shopkeeper who treats you like he is giving you secret of life as he was selling you some cheese :)
After cheese shop, my second stop was Mast Brothers Chocolate. Why this chocolatier is so famous and even has a franchise in London? Long Beard factor ? I dont think so :) Mast brothers import cacao beans from South America and make chocolates from them without any additives. Result is divine smell and even better taste. Here you can take chocolate making classes and at the end taste different kinds of chocolates. If you want to learn more about Mast brothers, you can watch this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DspDrgLcwds
For Williamsburg Style Dinner: Marlow and Sons
Unfortunately, I couldn't make it to Marlow and Sons for dinner but don't you make the same mistake :( This restaurant received “Bib Gourmand” award from Michelin which means "Amazing food with reasonable prices" As I heard It was not that reasonable but cheaper than fancy restaurants in Manhattan. If you go there for dinner, please order their famous cotails and eat some oysters for me, too. :)
Music Hall of Williamsburg
I decided to end my perfect Williamsburg day at Music Hall of Williamsburg. I can say that last activity of the day was the best activity above all. Its simply because this is one of the best night stops of Brooklyn and also whole New York. In Music Hall of Williamsburg, there is adventure every night. So you better check their program from their internet site. http://www.musichallofwilliamsburg.com/
And Happy Ending :)
I wouldn't believe that I would end up in such a different place than Manhattan with just a 10 minute metro ride. But this is the beauty of New York City ! In manhattan everything is so fast and easy but in Williamsburg even the cheese have identity :D You can do the math for the rest of the things ... I strongly advice you to spend one or half day in Williamsburg to see this alternative world...
